Personalized Plates
General rules for personalized plates are that
Cannot contain profanity or be vulgar
Will not follow usual format (ex. BBB-777)
Only be 7 characters long
Must be unique
Wait times can range anywhere from 4 – 6 weeks.
Veteran's Plates
Veteran’s Plates can only be used on passenger classified vehicles such as light trucks, SUV, passenger cars, and motorhomes.
People who meet any one of the requirements can obtain a Veteran’s Plate:
- Serving in the United Nations or NATO and a part of
- The Canadian Armed Forces
- An Allied Force
- Other Canadian Police Forces or,
- The RCMP
- A part of the Canadian Armed Forces who meet the National Defense Professional Classification (MOC).
- Served in World War 1, World War 2, or the Gulf War and was a part of:
- The Canadian Armed Forces
- An Allied Force
- The Canadian or allied Merchant Navy, or
- The Ferry Command
If you meet the requirements listed above, your eligibility will be determined by:
- The Royal Canadian Legion
- Alberta-NWT Command Veteran’s Plate
To Apply
- Complete an application for a Veteran’s Plate through the Royal Canadian Legion, and
- Include the following documentation listed below for your respective situation.
Veterans
- Canadian Forces Certificate of Service (both sides)
- Allied Forces Discharge Certificate or Certificate of Service
- Canadian or Allied Merchant Navy Service Record Book, or
- Canadian Forces Discharge Certificate
RCMP / Other Police Forces
- A letter from a RCMP Commanding Officer certifying of your service in a NATO operation or the United Nations.
- Submit
- the original completed form
- self-addressed stamped envelope, and
- a money order cheque for $5.00 to: Alberta NWT Command-Veteran’s Plate

Antique Plates
In order to qualify for Antique Plates, you must meet the following criteria listed below.
- Under Antique registration, your vehicle can only be used for parades or shows.
- Must be 25 years or older
If you wish to obtain a Antique Plate, you will need to bring:
- proof of ownership
- insurance documents
- personal identification.
Trailer Plates
To register a Trailer, you must:
- Have proof of identity
- Bill of sale
- Serial number of Trailer
Also, please be aware that insurance is not needed for trailers and you should keep the license plate if you do decide to sell it. No renewal is required.
Plate Transfers
If you have bought a new vehicle and would like to move the current plate, you can do so here. We ask that you bring:
- Proof of identity
- Insurance
- Bill of Sale
Your name must also be on all three to be valid.
